Decorating tips you may not have thought of

Thursday, March 11, 2010

If you are new to apartment living and are suddenly given the blank slate that is a series of bare walls, it can be more than a little intimidating knowing where to start. This is especially true if you are on a tight budget, and who isn’t these days? Here are a few can’t miss decorating tips that even the pros seem to forget about.

Frame posters

If you are moving in to an apartment from a college dorm or from home, you probably had a poster or two on your wall. If you were like most folks, the poster was just taped to your wall and over the years it got ripped and really began to show its age. You can have that poster back but in better shape if you frame it. Many top stores will frame a poster for you in a basic, black frame for less than $50. It is a great way to add a permanent addition to your walls for less.

Wall decals

If a framed poster is just too conventional for you, the latest craze is a wall decal. You can find decals of just about anything, from life size cut outs of pro athletes to silly robots, video game characters and more. Best of all, these decals easily stick to the wall with no adhesive and can be moved around quite a few times before wearing out. Be warned, however, these decals can be a bit on the pricy side.

Holiday lights year round

Holiday lights add a real charm to any apartment but who says they have to be for holidays only? Put up a string of electric icicles around your windows for a festive touch year round. Don’t over do it though, your place will take on a real campy feel if you overdo it.
