Being a Good Neighbor in Your Apartment

Tuesday, March 02, 2010

If there is one complaint that you hear from apartment dwellers more than ay other it is that they can’t stand dealing with noisy neighbors. While there is little you can do to clam up annoying neighbors, you can make an effort to be an ideal neighbour yourself.  Here are a few easy to follow tips for becoming the neighbor everyone wishes they had.

Keep an eye on the clock

It is impossible to say in this day and age that everyone works 9 to 5 and wants neighbors to be quiet after 10, but since your apartment complex likely has “quiet hours” it is best to obey them. Leave things like loud music, vacuuming, moving and other noisy activities to daylight hours. If you have an accident and need to vacuum at midnight, do so as quickly as possible. Also, if you are looking to throw a party and you plan on being up late, notify those around you the day before so they know what to expect. Better yet, invite them so they won’t be lying in bed wondering what is going on.

Get to know people

In some complexes, it may seem that new people moved in on an almost weekly basis. This makes getting to know the faces around you difficult, but it is worth it. Not only does it help to deter crime, you might end up making friends, which will make living there that much better.

The Golden Rule

It has become a bit of a cliché, but treat others as you would like to be treated. If you see someone with armfuls of groceries, hold the door for them. Strike up conversations with people who you’ve seen around a few times. Try smiling. It all sounds so simple, but these tips can truly transform how you live in your new place.
